We came to Crested Butte for one reason: downhill mountain biking. Crested Butte has an Adaptive Sports Center which spends the winter taking people skiing and the summer doing handcycling and 4 wheel mountain biking. We had seen pictures of people on the 4 wheel bikes and thought it looked incredible but we'd never tried it out before.

So today we got up early and headed over to the center to give it a try. For most of the summer they use the ski lifts to take bikers up the mountain, but we're here after peak season so the lifts were off. This meant that we got to drive up a service road to the top of one of the runs and then spent the day rolling down and driving back up. For the first run I was a bit tentative. The instructor rode ahead of me and Mike was behind me and I never felt unsafe, but I also wasn't sure how much I could push it so I used my brakes a fair bit and got used to the bike. But after a while I got more and more confident and was even able to get some air and take it down a single-track trails on the mountain (meaning narrower) where I had to go over a mini-bridge on two wheels and descend over some pretty big rocks. I was so impressed by what this bike could handle--I felt like I was really pushing it on those rocks and on some fast bits of the road, but it never seemed to even get close to tipping or losing control. I want one! I'm so glad we have two more days of this!
