After two years of waiting we have finally arrived in Rugao City, China which is about 200 k.m away from the great city of Shanghai. This new city is about to become my new home for the next 6-9 months where I have the opportunity to study Chinese at a local university during the week and teach English on the weekends. This city consists of 11 foreigners, now 12 with me and 1.4 million Chinese people, to say I am a sight would be an understatement.
I am staying with a lovely local family in a two room apartment and occasionally some extended family. They have really thrown some curve balls at me with their way of life. For example the door for the bathroom seems to be OPTIONAL! Also underwear no matter what your age is acceptable to walk around in as long as it's around the time you go to bed or for a while after you wake up
In the first week we discovered that I had a problem with my visa, well actually two. The first was that the month that we were traveling through China we had never bothered to check in with the police in which case they had none of our information which comes with a hefty fine. Also my student visa was applied with from a different school, which means another 30 day tourist visa then a student visa, comes with a couple more fines. This whole process took about 9.5 hours, running to the police station, to the bank, to a different police station, incurring more and more fines.
I’m looking forward to unlocking the secrets to this mysterious country’s culture and language. China is a great country full of a huge history and colorful people.
I have learned two very important facts so far…
1)I am fat, I’ve gone from a medium in Canada to an XXL
2) My feet are too large for any women’s shoes so I am down to men’s…
