I was looking for something to do on my birthday and found the secluded beaches of Parque Tayrona on Colombia's Caribbean coast to waste away a few days.  Although not that far from Cartagena, the park is not the easiest place to get to.  Three buses, a taxi and a 7.5km walk were required to get to the beautiful stretch of ocean.  Unfortunately, the weather was less than perfect with clouds and rain much of the time.  Still, it was the perfect place to lay around and spend a few days reading and swimming.  Good alone time.

The walk in itself was probably my favorite part of being there.  I've had an all-Andes South American adventure which means that I've skipped Amazonia altogether.  Walking through the lush jungle along the coast was all new.  Birds overhead sing tunes never heard before; shy monkeys scamper through the underbrush just out of site; millions of leaf-cutter ants march in wide swaths carrying their loads proudly; the most brilliant of butterflies floats by as if created by Pixar.  Some sounds are indescribable yet exotic.

What was that??

The beach itself was great, but as I said I didn't get a lot of sun.  The nightly rains didn't allow for much sleep in the hammock that I rented either.  The sun will come though.  I've changed plans (yet again) and will be taking a cruise to Panama via Islas San Blas with the Tupiza crew that I ran into again here.  After many issues and problems (hopefully all resolved now), we are scheduled to depart Tuesday.

More from Panama...happy 34th to me!
