Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and is known as a sweltering cesspool of a port town.  The bus ride from Cuenca brought me down, down, down to sea level....and everything that comes along with that.  HOTT and STICKY.  I felt like I was back in Vietnam riding the bus through miles and miles of banana and pineapple fields while repeatedly sweating through my shirt.

So why come here at all?  To catch a cheap deal to The Galápagos.  After some checking around I quickly came to the conclusion that I would be better off getting a flight and setting things up when I arrived.  Unfortunately, no seats are available until Thursday and I dread the thought of staying in this hellhole for that long.

¿Fortunately? that problem was solved for me.  After grabbing a bite I decided to walk down to Guayaquil's Malecón, the city's newly reconstructed waterfront promenade.  I arrived, reached in my day pack for my camera and discovered it wasn't there.

FUCK.

Maybe I took it out along with several other things and left it on my bed in my hostel.  I don't like carrying around books & etc. so I often leave them in my room.  I have a large ziploc bag full of electronic stuff (cords, cables, universal electricity converter, ...) that was also not there.

So....I huff it back to my room, throw open the door and curse myself for not finding my camera.  I traveled from Cuenca only that morning...my day pack was in my possession the entire time and I didn't sleep on the bus.  The bag was between my legs on the bus the whole time.  I didn't even shower when I arrived at the hostel.  How could someone have stolen it?

Maybe I left both the bag and my camera in my hostel in Cuenca?  Unfortunately, it was a no-name place that I happened to run across.  No way of calling....so.....I'm back on the bus tomorrow morning to Cuenca in the off-chance that I left it there.

Another five hour bus ride....hopefully for something.  UGH!
