Some say that trends start in Japan; hundreds must emerge there each month where only a few stick and spread around the world.  That may be true, I don't know....but I can say for certain that trends die in South America.  McDonald's is giving away Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figures in their kid's meals and WHAM! is the biggest thing ever.

Lima is just another big city, as expected.  I planned on staying only a few days here per recommendations and I'm glad.  I'm staying in the "hip, party" area of the city called Barranco.  It's a cliff-side community south of central Lima and the trendy shopping area of Miraflores.  It's not all nice though....I'm currently sitting in an internet cafe on Óvala Gutiérrez and can see a T.G.I.Friday's, Chile's, McDonald's (with Auto-Mac / Drive-Thru) and a Starbucks.  Just down the street are a few more familiars that I attached a photo of.

Not much to report...stocked up on a few books and drank a few drinks.  Looking forward to Ecuador and the Galápagos!

Big cities and big cities...
Two different things depending on where you are and what you are used to...

As you know the Netherlands aren't exactly what you would call a 'gargantuan' country ;-) The city I lived in (Weert) has approximately 45.000 inhabitants. However, during my 'farewell-party' we calculated that percentage wise that city is as big for Holland as Kunming is for China. In case you forgot: Kunming has approx. 4.5 million inhabitants...

It kind of changes the way you look at 'BIG' cities. Besides that, I still think Kunming is very laid back especially when compared to other cities such as Beijing or Shanghai.

But still, I can't blame you for not wanting to spend too much time in big cities! Wander on and enjoy the real beauties of South-America! And keep writing about it, so I know where I (and Shos) have to go when I (we) have the chance!!

Dikke kus en knuffel van je oude China vriendje,
Ruud

TMNT
Rodster,

I assume you have no way of knowing that a new CG Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is being released sometime in the future, explaining the happy meal thing.

On a different note, where can I get the 'make my pictures look like a beautiful paining' lens like what you clearly have on your camera? The long range shots from the posts before this one are amazing.

I also liked the guys with bayonets on their Uzis! I think maybe the missed the class where you learn that bayonet's are most useful on longer guns.

Cheers!
Brent

Re: TMNT
Glad you liked the pics because that is the last of the good ones! The new camera only has 6x zoom...the photos were good because of the camera, not the cameraman.

I thought bayonets went out with WWII. Modern ones are laser guided, right?
