Ushuaia is the southern-most city in the world and I'm very glad that I arrived during summer. Despite the seasonal "heat", there have been showers, snowfall and overcast conditions pretty much since I arrived. The weather is quite fickle and seems to change about every 10 minutes - sunny at one moment and rainy and windy the next.
Ushuaia lies on the Beagle Channel which opens to the Drake Passage and the southern sea. This is the passage I must cross on my Antarctic cruise in only a few days. The seas in the area are said to be among the roughest at times and I'm anxiously awaiting to see what the seas will give me. I've never been on open water such as this and don't know how my body will respond. Seasickness on the 7th continent doesn't sound like my idea of a great time.
Despite the weather, Ushuaia has been a nice and relaxing place to spend a few days. The port is a main destination for cruise ships and the little town is absolutely lit with people when one of the big boys is in dock. I commented on a VERY big and VERY nice private yacht that arrived a few days ago only to read in the paper the next day that it was Bill Gates' (although his people would not confirm nor deny his presence). In any case, I'm in good company, eh?
Besides dodging the weather and just going through general preparations for 11 days at sea I headed out for a 1/2 day hike with a few mates. Our destination was Laguna Esmeralda (Emerald Lake) and we weren't fortunate enough to catch a good weather day. Although it was partly sunny when we left the clouds quickly rolled in and we marched through rain and snow for the majority of the four hours. Oh well...it's Patagonia, afterall.
More after the ice-fest!!

Freeeeeze!!!
Wow....
Going to Antartica!! Sounds absolutely great! The Dutch couple we met in Tibet have been there as well and they said it was great!! He even did the ice swim and said it is something you shouldn't miss! Although his girlfriend complained that his 'you-know-what' was really, really tiny afterwards ;-) haha!
Enjoy!!
Kiss,
Ruudje
