Just take a look at the pics and you'll see why I've been looking forward to making it to Transylvania and the Carpathian Mountains for a while now. The region, including Brasov, Rasov, Bran, Sinaia, ... is wonderful. Sinaia gets my vote for most picturesque, but I enjoyed it all.
I arrived in Brasov tired and travel-weary. I had just taken the overnight train from Varna to Bucharest, spent about 4 hours walking around the city and snapping a few photos and then jumped directly on another train for the 3 hour journey into the mountains. The train ride into Transylvania itself was great. Once we got into the mountains it was storming....thunder clapping overhead lightening flashing frequently. Above our heads the mountains soared with billowy storm clouds falling down the mountains like waterfalls. It was exactly what I expected - very Transylvania.
After a quick rest and shower I was off with several new insta-friends to see Brasov and surroundings. We spent the days wondering through medieval villages and hiking through mountains. Nights, of course, were spent having 3-hour dinners followed by drinks and dancing. I've enjoyed the food in Romania (and Bulgaria even more), but I can tell I've put on a few L-B's. The cuisine is very meat-and-potatoes, often laden with butter and/or some creamy sauce. Yummy, if not perfect for the waistline. For instance, my first dinner in Brasov was a chicken and mushroom "stew" in a light creamy sauce served over fresh polenta and a cabbage salad. Wash it all down with a few Romanian brews and you've got a 2,000 calorie meal!
