Shabbat Shalom

Well, a week on the beach has certainly helped my attitude. In contrast to traditional Jerusalem, Tel Aviv is quite the liberal beach city. Club after club, beachside cafe after cafe, beaches covered in tanned beautiful people wearing next to nothing.
I enjoyed myself.
I spent most of the week with an Aussie guy I met in Jerusalem - Jake. He's 21 and on his way to London to live/work for a year or so. We hit it off right away and decided to head to Tel Aviv on the same day, so we just hung around for the week. To be honest (and Jake would absolutely back me up on this) we were the only two "normal" people in our hostel. The hostel, btw, was only a few blocks from the beach on one of the main drags, Ben Yahuda. It was nearly full all the time and had a street level bar. Our other roomies included "Big Ben" who was scoshe (with a hard "o") which is some mix of Scotch and something else. We could only understand about every other word because of his accent, but he was a big animated dude. He pulled himself up on a ledge in the bar, rocked his feet up and held his body there by his toes...that is, until the cement block ledge gave way. He was arrested a few nights later for bashing a car after he thought the driver was after him. He also claimed to be a witch and refused to say where he was going next because we might all be dark angels.
Then there was "Little Ben" who was in same room as Jake and me and was a bad stereotype of the southern Cali frat boy with a beer belly that would arrive home between 5AM and 7AM every morning with a beer in his hand and sleep all day. We ran into him a few times during daylight hours and he was wandering aimlessly on the beach or a street...this dude was overmedicated.
Mind you, these are just a few examples of the perfectly lovely people we met.
I know I'm making fun, but I really did have a good time. It was great to sit in a streetside cafe and have burgers/beers or sit outside in the Jaffa market and eat a wonderful vegetarian Asian kinoa that we stumbled upon.
Very relaxing...now back to the road.
