Well, after much searching & stewing, I believe I have gathered together the correct combination of items to bring along with me for my journey. For the record:

Big Bag -or- On My Body
3 pairs pants
2 pairs shorts (1 doubles as a bathing suit)
2 long-sleeved shirts
3 short-sleeved shirts
3 pairs underwear
3 pairs socks
1 "going out-fit" - jeans and button-down shirt
1 pair trail shoes
1 pair flip-flops
1 thin jacket/fleece combo
1 micro-towel
1 watch
1 belt
color copies of passport
ziploc bags, various sizes
1 small bag of toiletries:
-dental floss
-liquid soap
-antibacterial hand sanitizer
-wet wipes (very important!)
-shaving cream & razors
-face scrub
-Meds - ibuprofen/cipro/immodium
-sun block
-insect repellant (this is 98% DEET - I may return sterile!)
-hair trimmer
-condoms (in case I lose my virginity while abroad)

Small Bag / Day Pack
1 passport (& extra visa photos)
1 wallet w/ credit, discount and membership cards
1 camera
2 rechargeable camera batteries
2 512MB memory cards
1 USB camera adapter cord
1 universal power adapter
1 iPod Mini w/headphones - fully stocked!
1 iPod recharger
1 inflatable neck pillow
2 Lonely Planet Guides - Istanbul to Cairo and Eastern Europe
Color copies of passport

I also need a hat, but will probably just buy one on the road. Let me know if you think of anything I have left out!

I've had time during trip planning to find some good deals on clothes - generally, the pants cost less than $25USD and the shirts cost less than $10USD. I'm starting off with these basics so I can toss them when they get trashed or when I need to change clothes as I enter a warmer / cooler climate. Many of the items are made from quick-drying materials for both comfort & overnight washing. It'll be interesting to see how long "the basics" will last - I can already feel the need to have something a bit more, um, fashionable. The jacket and shoes were my largest expenses at roughly $75USD each.
