These past couple days have been absolutely crazy. I think our rides are finally coming together though and I am now finally able to keep up with this blog. To start off, the first day was a serious learning experience. Everything that could go wrong, did. It became clear pretty early that no one seemed to know the route and our riders got really angry very quickly. After starting out in our trailer, I was switched to ride with one of the interns, Jeremy, in the luggage vehicle. Navigating and luggage has become my new job. Jeremy and I got lost and ended up in Sonoma, California instead of Fairfax, California which ended up being a 30 minute mistake. When we finally made it back, Robin Williams was at the water stop meeting with some of the State Farm volunteers and the riders. We then continued on to our hotel, which was probably one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in but apparently was the only one they could afford in Napa. After unloading luggage we decided to put them in everyone's rooms. Unfortunately, a lot of the rooms ended up being changed which caused some very angry riders missing their things. Although the hotel sucked, the staff was awesome and they helped us with pretty much anything we needed. It also rained that afternoon putting the icing on the cake.
The next day was better. We decided it would be best to make some signs to mark the route so I spent the majority of the day marking the route with Jeremy and our director Amanda. I spent the night before throwing up all night so I was really not feeling well and had not gotten a lot of sleep. Everything went smoothly until right before Davis, California when a bunch of the riders got lost and we ended up picking up a bunch of them to make it to dinner on time. Let me tell you, the riders HATE being picked up. The majority of them want to complete every last mile of this ride and are very annoyed when we have to shuttle them to stay on schedule. We stayed at The Citizen in Sacremento which was an AMAZING hotel. I could practically do cartweels in the bathroom. Having a bell hop was an added bonus for me as well. I finally got eight hours of sleep too or should I say an eight hour coma?
Today defintely seemed to be smoother. We shuttled the riders to the start of Highway 16 to avoid all of the traffic in Sacremento and had a relatively easy route with only two major roads. The State Farm volunteers have been great and have been such a huge help with all of the water and lunch stops making our jobs so much easier. The only minor crisis we faced today was a blown out tire on the luggage van. Thankfully, we took it to check the tire pressure and that was when the mechanic noticed and fixed it just in time for us to unload everyone's bags. Our day ended pretty early today but it is probably good because tomorrow we are going to have some serious hills which will be very difficult for all of our riders, not just the hand cylists. Now I am off to find some food and hopefully have a relatively early night.
