With that rant out of my system, we finally got to our hostal that was extremely cheap at 11.60 E a night but had 20 people per room. It didnt end up mattering much because we had to leave the next morning for the only train to Porto at 4:50 AM, so we wouldnt have gotten much sleep to begin with
. We were just happy it was cheap. We checked our bags and wandered around the town for a few hours. Like I said, it was small and every alley had a good view of a church or an old building so we had plenty to see. We then sat down outside for a good lunch. There are two great things we have found about eating in Europe. We have found that not everything is good but at the same time, at every meal, there is some great redeaming feature. For example, my pizza was pretty gross and my mussels were OK but my dessert was AMAZING. Ericīs gazpacho soup was average and his dessert was alright but his pork knuckle roast thing was fantastic. It is just cool how it works out that way.
After that, we went back and took a quick nap before the Spain v France game that night. It has been so much fun watching the world cup that I will be disappointed when it is over. Spain lost but every bar in town was packed and people were just going crazy. We got acosted numerous times with paint and flags and t-shirts...I guess people just thought I looked Spanish. It was just a great experience. Tomorrow is the Portugal and England game and we will be in Lagos, that should be nuts!
After the game, we went to sleep and had an early wake up call at 3 AM for our train to Porto. That was a fun walk in the dark early morning but like I said, it could have been worse, it could have been raining.
Salamanca is a great university town with a walkable old section and a ton of students milling around everywhere. We got there early because we took an early train out of Madrid and spent the first hours walking around attempting to find our hidden hostel. This is becoming a major issue at every new city we get to, especially in Spain. The directions online that they send you just suck. For example, in Salamanca, they give you the bus stop to get off at and then tell you it is a 5 minute walk from there. That doesnt give you much to go on and you end up wandering around for an hour looking for this hostel that is supposedly 5 minutes away.
