It is hard to describe the feelings that I had when I first arrived in Spain. There was a mix of anticipation, excitment, joy, fear, and love. I was anticipating all the new places that I was going to be able to visit, all the new people I was going to meet, the new culture I was going to be immersed in, and new family I was going to be living with. I was excited and joyful because I was in a place where I had never been before, and I was happy to met my new family. I was fearful of the language barrier (mother you didnt prepare me very well!) and not seeing my family for so long. I was in love with the new city I was in. I saw so many things that I wanted to do, see, smell, try, and taste.
As soon as I left the airport, I got into a taxi and made my way to my señoras house. The cab dropped me off and took off. I had no phone, no contact information, no idea where the school was, and no one was with me. Needless to say, I was scared. I buzzed up to the apartment of my señ answer. I tried answer. This is when the panic set in. I had probably sat there for about 20 minutes, pondering how to resolve this situation, when a womans voice came on the speak, ¨¡hola! ¿que haces? lo siento, estaba duchándome¨ seriously???? my lady was showering while i was waiting outside! HA not a good start. Regardless, I finally got upstair and introduced myself to the lady with whom I was going to be living for the next 5 months. I found my room and unpacked my stuff. Señora told me that there would be 3 other boys living here. One from Germany, one from France, and once from northern Spain.
As I was unpacking my belongs, one of my roomates arrived. His name is Luis he was born in Italy but lives in spain. He also speaks like a million languages (spanish, portuguese, german and english). Then Jean arrived...the frenchman who has lived in Indonesia for most of his life. He speaks French, spanish, english, and indonesian. The german one, Max, wouldnt arrive till later in the night.
Jean and I decided to head out into the city to meet my friends from school, Adam and Sarah for some lunch and ¡¡¡¡SANGRIA!!! the best drink ever. We wound up going to a restaurant called Pizza Jardin and getting food with several of our friends. It was a great afternoon.
That night, my friends and I continued our exploration of the city by going down to Sol, the main plaza in Madrid. We bar and tapas hopped around the city and didnt return until late at night. It was a great first day in madrid. Now a month and a half into my trip, I still have yet to find a European city that rivals the night life and the amount of things to do than Madrid, Spain¡
