We made it London- even without cellphones!

DAY 2  (we lost a day in travel)
Amanda met up with Ryan at the Heathrow Airport- the flights were long, but the most was still made of the day.

After arriving we went to Liverpool St. Station and explored a bit then bought our ferry ticket (in advance) to Amsterdam. We then met-up with our couch surfer hosts in Harrow-on-the-hill, a 30 min ride on the tube from central london. We went and had a pub dinner, walked around
Harrow- it is a great town. It is the home of the Harrow School for Boys- where Winston Churchill went.... we slept HARD once we got home! (p.s. our couch surfers are great- a 20 something couple- he's a teacher, she works in marketing for a camera company).

Got up with a full night of sleep. Spent 49 pence on some scones and some milk (none for Ryan) and ate them enroute. We are so thrifty! Then we went to Abbey Road in St. John's Wood and took our pictures to copy the beatles! It was touristy, but awesome. Thankfully there were other tourists doing the same thing as us- must love the Beatles fans! We then went to Westminster and saw Big Ben, the Parliament Building, West Minster Abbey and the changing of the guard. We have the tube system down LOVE it. Seattle should take some notes.

Then we went to Piccadilly Circus and shopped and people-watched. People wear odd clothing here. Saw the trocadero and Ryan remembered he had been there before- it was a crazy funhouse arcade type thing. In order to get out or find the bathroom  you had to walk through the entire building- so sneaky.

Went from Piccadilly to the Tower Bridge. Saw more odd clothing and odd but cool buildings. Some of the modern buildings take it to a new level. The bridge was beautiful and we ate lunch next to the Thames under the shadow of the bridge.

Went to Kings Cross Station and took our picture at platform 9 3/4. We then kidnapped Hermione and forced her into giving us floo powder so that we wouldn`t have to pay for flights anymore....

Went to Covent garden. Ryan participated in a pit crew competition for the toyota formula car and was .1 seconds away from winning tickets to the British Grandprix. We would have sold the tickets anyways, but it was quite the experience! Amanda saw a street entertainer  dressed as Captain Sparrow and took a picture with him.

Went to Trafalgar square and climbed the Lion, took a couple of pictures.... what a day!

Another couch surfer joined us from California and we made pizza for dinner.

Tomorrow's plan: Greenwich and St. Pauls then overnight ferry to Amsterdam.

We are having the time of our lives!!!

Couch Surfing?
Mom is wondering if in 'couch surfing' you are actually sleeping on a couch. If you are exchanging emails with Tom Everett, he may be interested in this.

Couch surfing was great in London. You sleep on whatever they give you. We got a fold out bed. The gps has been great for finding things, but it does stuggle a bit when walking through alleys and squares...I think it doesn't understand when your off of the roads. Saved us a few times though.

Re: Couch Surfing
Couch surfing is organized through a website where people willing to host tourists/travellers in their home can post a profile about themselves. As a traveller, you must also create a profile (you are supposed to host people in return) and you can browse the profiles of everyone in the location you are headed. The idea is that in every city there are people hosting 'couch surfers' so no one has to pay for lodging and you get a friend out of it.
