Naples/Pompeii
These cities and sites were on the agenda for Day 2 or Tuesday. We left first thing in the morning from the port in Naples to the town of Pompeii. In the bus we were given our history lesson of how the Volcano (Mt Vessuvius) erupted and covered the ancient city of Pompeii (population of 20000) (the whole site is actually about 100 acres) with first a poisonous gas which immediately killed the 3000 or so remaining inhabitants and pets mainly chained dogs. The unchained dogs ran away. We went the hill to the site and began our tour. Like most Roman towns there was a town square or Forum (pedestrian meeting area off of which was located the Municipal buildings, courts, temples to the gods, wholesale and retail food vending buildings. Off the main forum area were the residential streets. Unlike many modern cities the rich and poor lived side by side. I have taken many pictures of ash covered inhabitants and wall frescos as well as the forum, streets and house of the inhabitants. Ask when we get back and I will offer to do a slideshow and yes I have been editing my pictures as I go. (Mostly).
