On the way to Palenque we stopped to buy supplies (especially water). Palenque had some impressive structures in the middle of the jungle some of which we managed to climb. It was not as busy as Chichen itza and in our opinion was better than Chitchen Itza. The only problem was that it was another very hot day and Roxy struggled ( we went through about 8 litres of water between 4 adults and 3 small children). We bought some souvenirs and went on our way to Cascada de Agua Azul
The road was very curvy as we were climbing mountains and those speed humps were driving us crazy. Not because they were there but because you can’t see them (they are not painted as in other places or the paint wore off). When we finally got close to Cascada de Agua Azul we were stopped by some rebels who requested money for going there - it was about a $1 AUD per person but I guess made us a bit uneasy. We then got to the real entrance and paid another fee to see this natural wonder.
When we got there we first took some photos prior to going for a swim. There are so many waterfalls and the colour of the water is just magic. The water was quite “fresh” comparing it to everything else here (40 + degrees temperatures and cold shower is actually hot shower). When we finished we made our way to the car to embark on a 3.5 hour journey back to Villahermosa. There was only one problem... My best brother in law (I have only one) lost the keys. And because there were a lot of kids around us we thought someone pinched them. Luckily the keys were found and we managed to get home rather than being stuck in the middle of the mountains.
Just as we were leaving the rain started (one of those tropical rains) and a lot of trees were on the road but it didn’t stop us on our way home, although my brother in law was stressed about spending a night in the car stranded in the jungle :). We also stopped at some stalls on the side of the road to buy some traditional costumes for us (except that Roxy got Mattias a Joseph’s coat!). Daniel’s (brother in-law) mum is organising a party on Sunday for Daniels and Abigail’s birthday party and we will wear them then. The photos will be coming shortly.
We finally got back to Villahermosa by about 8pm and we soon after crashed into our beds for a well deserved rest (in an air conditioned room!)
