Trains in Sri Lanka are not luxury however there are normally at least 2 classes on their trains 2nd & 3rd to be honest I couldn't tell the difference between them apart from third is defiantly more crowded than 2nd.
Our train today has an observation car which is 1st class although again I cant really tell the difference apart from all the seats face the opposite direction of travel and there is a big window to view where you have just been from , for a few hours I actually enjoyed the trip but then the novelty wore off
By about midday it became clear that we were never going to get to our destination on time infact I was beginning to worry if we would get there the same day.
A lot of Sri Lankens railways are single track with a few passing places so they kinda save up trains in either direction when running late then send them almost together.
Our train was shunted into a sidings and we had to wait our turn which was about 3 hours great train travel sucks.
When we finally climbed into the hill country dusk had set in so we couldn’t see much apart from the people walking along the track behind the train , the train was so slow you could overtake it walking in places , on the plus side I met some Sri Lanken lads on the train and we chatted about films music , cricket they even got me singing along to Linkin park songs on the train was a laugh.
We eventually arrived in Nuwara Eliya (well the closest station to it ) at about 7pm some 5 hours late that meant I had been on the train for the best part of 11 hours another waste of a day & to top it all, all the bars in town were closed do to a religious festival so I had to have beer in my room great night out that turned out to be , tomorrow morning we have a car picking us up at 1000am for a trip through the Hill Country to Kandy weather dosnt sound that promising though.
