Rock Gia
Entry 26 of 32 | show all | print this entry |
This'll be a short one because we were only passing through Rach Gia on our way to Phu Quoc Island.
It was another town like Ha Tien - very local. As a result, we got a taste of the local timetable. The Lonely Planet bible mentions that the Vietnamese go to bed early and get up early. I figured that meant they get up at like 5:30, get a cup of coffee, read the paper and get a head start on the day by 7am. WRONG!
I kid you not. At 4:30 in the morning, Tracy and I awoke to cymbals crashing, drums thumping and brass blaring. Startled, I run to the window to see what the &*%$ is going on. I peer out into the darkness and under one of the street-lamps are a number of plastic mini-chairs and mini-tables set up on the sidewalk. The locals are just sitting down to enjoy their morning java (ALL sidewalk vendors use kid-size plastic furniture. Easier to transport, I guess).
And in front of the morning commuters, on the back of a large pick up truck is.......drum roll, please........a freakin' marching band!!!!! Looking back on it, I must have been dreaming because they were wearing full-on marching band costumes, complete with the big hats and the frilly lapels. Between the percussion and the brass, I would have to say the whiny brass section was the most jolting. Trumpets, saxophones and I think even French horns were rockin it out. Luckily, the concert only lasted about 10 minutes before the truck pulled off to another location to serenade (?) another group of locals.
Vietnamese Cultural Difference - Marching Band Serenades at 4:30am: WTF!?!??!?!
