One of the hardest things about being here is figuring out what to eat and what it is. Many of the larger restaurants have English menus. But a lot can get lost in the translation. There are so many small eateries all along the roads.  Some of them are no larger than a walk-in closet. They have a bar and maybe 5-6 chairs. There are pictures or fake food samples to look at. So you can point and order.

The flavors and smells are so amazing. I am still hesitant to eat some of the foods...I like to know what I am eating and that is not always the case.

We have found that eating out is not that expensive. Especially when you get a fully prepared meal, hot and fresh and yummy for around 780 yen...I call that about $10.00.

The fruit and vegetables are very expensive. A really small head of lettuce is 298 yen...I call that over $3.00. Cantaloupe is 698 yen...over $7.00. We have enjoyed making a large salad for dinner minus the veggies...we have found a Deep Roasted Sesame Seed Salad Dressing that we love!!

There are so many great things about being here....Food is definitely one of them.

Susan, I'm glad you are handling the food side of things well. Has Mark learned how to say "no onions, please!" in Japanese? I guess if you're not sure what you're having, at least make sure it's cooked. I think "Sushi" in english means "we have no stove". Love you guys!

susan, all that food looks good---but I'm with you--won't eat some of it.
