After again a 17 hour train-ride, I woke up seeing everybody leave the train, I presumed we were in Chengdu and when I walked out of the station and saw someone from the travel agency hold up a paper spelling "Welcome Rutger van Dijk!", I knew I was actually in the correct city.

Chengdu is the 'gateway' city to go to Lhasa/Tibet. I had organized my Tibet Travel Permit and flight-ticket (the train was full for another week) from Xi'an already. Everything went smoothly and I managed to get a 50% discount on my flight ticket! I don't even know why, but I only ended up paying 900 quan (90 euro) for it. Lucky me! Turned out that they booked the flight ticket for the next day already, so my Chengdu-time was reduced by 24 hours. Oh well! That's more time in Tibet! :)

I made my way to the 'Mix' hostel, were I was immediately greeted by the Israeli guy Yishai, from yesterday in Xi'an. It's cool that all travellers go to the same place :) By chance Leanne, whom I had met in Beijing, was there and Yishai also turned out to know her. Me, her, Yishai and another israeli girl Meirav decided to go to the people's park. I thought it would be just another park, but it turned out that everybody was dancing there! Mostly 50+ year olds doing traditional dances, some in special outfits, some doing circle dancing, some singing and others were just playing Go or Chinese Chess. Meirav, within 10 seconds, joined the dancing session and I of course couldn't fall behind. So we ended up dancing about 8 different chinese dances in the park. I don't think we mastered them perfectly.. but hey, it's the effort that counts, right? ;)

I was planning to go to bed early, since the general advise is to be well rested in order to prepare your body for the high altitude in Tibet, but of course I ended up playing cards with Meihav till like 01:00 AM and having about 3 hours of sleep. Wihoooooo! I mean, who schedules flights so you have to get up at 05:00.. :)

Old & New! (check out that beard! :)

Old building that gave me the creeps:
