Back to Aswan I had read about the 'Elephantine Island' which lies in the Nile, for Egyptian Pound you can get there (15 eurocent). Somehow I felt very drawn to this island even though I couldn't tell you when. Everybody was tired from the long trip to Abu Simbel, but I felt I had to go. I got there and it was like I stepped into a different world. No people trying to sell you stuff, so incredibly friendly. The first guy was walking around with his sheep and invited me to see his home. So simple, no roof or anything, not all the walls finished. But it never rains, so they don't care...

I kept walking until I got to the 'Nubian House'. The village elder lives here and straight away he invited me to his home. From the beginning on I felt an incredibly strong connection with this man. We talked a while in his room after which I invited him for tea in the store next door.

There I got to see the most amazing sunset ever, I could see the 'non-busy-side' of the Nile with only a few felluca's going up and down and the birds flying back and forth. I talked to Rohan (the village elder) for hours and we ended up talking for hours till the sun went down, at one point I was hugging this 63 year old man for a few minutes. It felt so natural, very unreal! He invited me to stay as long as I wanted and to fly my whole family over if i wanted... i told him i'd think about it. But first I would have to check out the rest of the world. Maybe some day! :)
