Coming from Thailand, it's cooooold. Snow on the ground, and flurries most days.
A taxi ride through 45 minutes of backroads from the Prague airport took me to the small nearby town of Celakovice. Here, our campus is the 4th floor of a hotel/conference center which used to be a Communist Re-education building; you can even see the red paint in some places on the residential walls. The elevator has no inside door, but the food is awesome.
Before long we were back in Prague on a class scavenger hunt as an introduction to the city. The city is beautiful. Baroque architecture, with arches, columns, and statues
Since then we have been into the city numerous times. Saw Mozart's first opera, Don Giovanni, in the Estate Theater where it was originally performed. I may have returned for a very manly Sleeping Beauty ballet. We also went on a ghost tour, listened to chamber music with soprano singing, a violin, and an organ in a beautiful church. Oh, and a brewery tour of course -- for class. The Czechs do pride themselves on having the highest beer consumption per capita in the world. The city of Pilsen, where Pilsners were first made is in The Czech Republic. Our group will be going there for another unrelated class event.
The Czech Republic is also one of the few places Absinthe is legal and openly made and sold.
