Thursday was our last day in Buenos Aires.  WE went to the zoo during the day.  it was interesting, for a zoo.  many of the buildings are modeled after great architectural works.  the one mentioned in our book was the elephant house, which is a replica of the temple of a goddess in mumbai.  there were some interesting animals, though.  lots of tropical birds.  i saw a tucan for the first time.  it looked fake, like the colors of its bill were painted on.  and an animal called a carpincho (sp?), itīs like a giant gopher, about 3 foot tall when sitting on itīs haunches. weird looking.

after eating some amazing lamb stew at a little cafe,. we went back to the hostel to get ready to go to the Boca game.  ismael was totally psyched to go, although he got a little nervous when a guy at the hostel mentioned that people might rip off our knock-off jerseys thinking they were real monkey

.  he made me put another shirt on underneath.  isnīt he so cute when he worries about me?

we had gone to the stadium on tuesday to buy tickets.  our hostel was arranging a tour that was going to cost 250pesos.  we got them for 150.  yeah!  and then as we were walking away, ismael asked a gentleman if the area we were sitting in was safe.  we started talking with us, and took us into the stadium.  we saw the area where they do press conferences after the games.  and then we went to the seats right next to the field.  he showed us where our seats were.  we were wondering who he was that he just took us in like that, but he even said he was surprised they let us walk in.

back to thrursday.  we headed out and tried to catch a cab, but none would even stop for us.  they saw our jerseys and refused to take us down there.  i canīt say i blame them.  soccer fans are a little too fanatical.  there are deaths at games every year all over the world.  needless to say, we were a little wary of going.  the game was against colo colo, the team we had seen in chile.  any game is exciting, but argentinians and chileans tend to dislike each other, each thinking theyīre better.  this was set to be a big game, and the seats were sold out.  we finally got a bus down there little monkey

we got into the stadium and were directed to our seats.  they were where the gentleman had showed us.  they were much better.  in fact, they were probably the best seats in the house.  literally.  we were in the 2 seats right next to the president of the soccer clubīs box.  and if he doesnīt have the best seats, who does?  and the guy next to us was on the board of directors.  he has box seats, but lets a friend use them and sits down where we were every game.  we were at the half field, set up high enough to see the whole field clearly, in the first row so no one was in front of us.  God is amazing.  we saved money and got awesome seats.

this was an AWESOME game.  the final score was 4-3, boca.  a game normally has anywhere from 1 to 3 goals.  a total of 7 is outstanding.  the first goal boca made was a guy diving and heading it in.  so cool.  and the crowd was so electrifying.  the super-fan areas were packed, people standing shoulder to shoulder.  there were probably around 40,000 people there, and only about 3,000 were from chile.  they have a section up at the top for the visitors, and police are stationed all around the edges, to keep them in and keep others out.  the crowds were chanting and cheering.  any time the chileans would start to chant, the argentinians would start whistling weird rabbit looking thing
weird rabbit looking thing
.  imagine 40,000 people whistling at the same time.  very loud.  there is a certain whistle in the latino community that is essentially a curse word.  and the chants are rather raunchy too.  a lot of things about īyour motherī and other things that are not appropriate for writing here.  it was interesting to have 40,000 people all chanting the same thing.  the placed seemed to shake.  and when boca would score, forget it.  everyone would jump up and scream and cheer.  crazy.  needless to say, we had a great evening.  although when we got back to the center where our hostel was, we decided not to go out and get some food, since several guys wearing chilean jerseys were rather upset with us for wearing boca jerserys, and honestly seemed like they were going to jump us.  like i said, they can be a little too fanatical.

Fun!
What a fun time it sounds like you had at the game. I know the crowds can get a little bit out of hand - but the excitement must have been overwhelming! I am glad the two of you are having such a terrific time...Love to you both...Jill
