well, after that crappy bus ride, we were exhausted when we got into neuquén. we asked about camping, took the bus out of town, and walked back a gravel road. after calling for someone, a woman in a nearby house came out and told us that she didn´t think there was camping there anymore, but we could wait and ask the people in charge. while we waited i took a nap on a picnic table. the owner showed up so we asked him if we could camp. he was reluctant, apparently the area floods and he´s had to pay for people´s ruined belongings. we told him we would take anything right then, so he said it would be fine. after setting up we headed into town. ooo, it´s hot. we called our friend sylvana, whom we met on the inca trail. she insisted that we stay with her, so then it was back out to camp to tear down. that night we went over to her parents´ home, beto and rosa. sweet people and a beautiful home. they gave us a traditional argentinian asado. que rico! i even tried blood sausage. they all asked if i liked it and told me if i didn´t, i didn´t have to eat it. it was actually very tasty, i was just getting full. they were amazed at how little i ate, they kept trying to give me more food.
the next day sylvana´s boyfriend, miguel, took us and her son to visit some bodegas in the area. it was actually the first time he´d ever gone. miguel is a high school literature teacher, and they were about to go on strike. he kept saying "on strike". he is one of the funniest people i´ve met. he would randomly say things in english, and he acts things out and makes sounds to go along with it. hilarious. that night we had another asado. this time sylvana and miguel made us pollo al disco. they cook chicken in a wrought iron disk over a fire and add vegetables and marinate it with beer and little wine. again, so good. another friend of theirs came over, pablo. they are all going to pablo´s house in mar del plata in three weeks, about the time we were going to get there, so pablo invited us to join them. we stayed up until almost 3, eating and talking. sylvana says my spanish is much better in the 5 weeks since she met me. i am understanding so much more, and much more confident in speaking. guess this trip is serving its purpose. .
