well, thursday we packed up and left valpo.  when we were leaving the hostel, a man who "watches" the cars that are parked on the street asked us for money for keeping an eye on our car for the past 2 days.  ismael told him he didn´t own the street and that he had asked the guy who runs the hostel if we had to pay and he said no.  the man was a jerk and said something about mexico, so that got ismael´s blood boiling.  but we left without incident.  what a pinhead.  wanting us to pay for parking on a public street.  and then insulting his country.  people can be idiots.

before we left town we wandered the neighborhood and ismael took a gazillion pictures of the murals and grafitti.  then we stopped at pablo neruda´s house, one of 3 he had in chile.  he was a nobel prize winning poet and a political figure in chile.  the house was designed to have the best view of the city, and it does, from the study upstairs it´s almost 360degrees lots of wires
lots of wires
.  the original architect died before completeing it, so neruda finished the inside and designed it to be like a ship, narrow passages, low ceilings, lots of wood.  the decor is very ecclectic, but interesting.

then it was off to santiago, with a stopover at the bodega casas de bosque in the casablanca valley.  (look at that, i´ve been to casablanca)  this was the nicest and most modern winery we´ve visited.  we got to choose which wines we wanted to taste and they gave us a plate of nuts and raisins made from their grapes.  these were some of the best wines we´ve had too.  i really liked the sauvignon blanc reserve and wanted to try the late reserve (the sweetest one), but i wasn´t allowed that one.  ismael liked the pinot noir.  reds are more complex and my palate isn´t that sophisticated yet.  i´ll stick with my sweet whites.  we wanted to ship a box of them home, but the shipping alone would have been $300.  sad.  we´ll have to try and find it when we go home.  they sell it in florida and boston (libby, you might have to get us a few bottles next time you head out that way)

we got into santiago and had to say goodbye to our tiny car.  a little sad, now we´re subject to public transportation again.  after dinner we went back to the hostel and watched the democratic debates.  No more drama, vote for Obama!  it was very interesting, my first debate i´ve watched all the way through.  i´m becoming such a grownup.

Why
weren't you allowed to have the other wine? Did you have too much and they cut you off?
Thanks for calling yesterday. It is always good to hear your voice.
Love and blessings,
mom

You are not voting for Obama, right? I have been reading along but not posting any comments but this I had to clarify. Thanks for all the writing so we can know you are having fun and are safe. xoxjonni

it is so
i am voting for obama. after the debate, and reading online about the 2 main democratic and 2 main republican candidates` positions on the issues, i have found i`ve gone over to the dark side, i think i`m a democrat. please don`t exile me from the family, i`m just joining jill and ismael. check out http://www.thevoterguide.org/a-chicagotribune08/race-detail.do?id=10053315
it`s interesting to see each candidates` stance on key issues. love you all

Re: thanks!
ok, it`s not that the late harvest wasn`t ready, there is only a small quantity of it and it too is not opened for tastings.
