Happy Valentineīs Day!
that morning we got our rental car and headed out of the city. itīs very difficult driving around in a city, let alone a country, we've never been in, especially when you don't have a map. luckily, iīm an amazing navigator. that and thereīs only one highway in chile that runs the length of the country. we headed north to la serena. along the way it was desert, with nothing. very boring. and itīs strange to me that itīs completely dry and brown and right up against the ocean. but la serena has over 300 clear days a year, so not a lot of rain.
as we drove over another hill, la serena and itīs neighboring towns lay before us. we thought it was going to be a small sleepy little beach town, but it was really quite large. we found a campsite about a block from the beach and set up. then, the beach. we walked around and enjoyed it all. itīs nice to be some place warm and relaxing. we went back to camp to rest before heading back out for the night. but we fell asleep and then it was morning. oops.
the next day we did some errands around town and then went in search of a bathing suit. but, alas, there werenīt any. how can a beach town not have a huge selection of suits. i know itīs the end of the season, but thereīs a freakinī beach here people. i settled for some girlīs swim trunks. but when we got down to the water it was pretty dirty and there was these lumps of clear gel stuff everywhere. it looked like a truck of breast implants exploded on the beach. i thought it was jellyfish, but there werenīt any actual jellyfish anywhere. eventually we did come upon some whole jellyfish. and they were huge. some were about a foot across. after that i didnīt want to go in the water, so we just walked along the edge.
we wanted to barbecue for dinner, so we started our coals and then went to the store. i even drove! when we got back our coals had died, so ismael had to start all over. it took a lot of work but after an hour he finally got things going, we started talking with some neighbors. they ended up hanging out until almost 2, so we didnīt eat anything cause we didnīt want to be rude and eat in front of them. and it turns out they had gotten nervous about our coals and poured water on them. no wonder it took so long to get the fire going again! dumb neighbors. .

HI
I enjoy looking at the pictures posted by other people of the areas you are. It is interesting to see some of the sights you talk about.
Did you go to a glacier in Santiago? There are some great photos of one there.
Can't wait to see your pictures. Can we look at your CDs?
Blessings,
mom
