Treated ourselves to a full irish camp breakfast before the long drive to Katherine. Stopped halfway at Pine Creek where we saw a vintage(and not so vintage) car rally. Visited the old pit lookout on the outskirts of town. Its now full of water as the mining company diverted the local river for 14 months to fill the pit after it closed down (6500 megalitres of water).

Midway between Pine Creek and Katherine are the most wonderfull Edith Falls. We trekked up into the hills to the secluded pools and soaked our feet in the evening sunshine.

Arrived and stayed in Shady Lane caravan park and had a nice dinner followed by some cheese and wine that we picked up in Woolworths. (Got a few looks from the campers).

Katherine is the 3rd largest town in the Northern Territory but once you leave the main street it looks like the wilderness that surrounds it will overrun it at any moment.

Next day we really splashed out and took a helicopter trip over Katherine Gorge and Nitmiluk National Park. What a blast as we flew over all 13 Gorges and the escarpment spotting wildlife and admiring the view from the air.In the afternoon we did the 10km return trek to the end of the first gorge. We climbed down and soaked our feet in the river water. We really struggled with the 40 degree dry heat on the way back.

Enjoyed our short but memorable visit to Katherine as we drove that night towards Litchfield.
