Took a 5 hour scenic drive this morning through the mountain range that separates North and South Vietnam. In the north there are four seasons like back home; in the south there are only the wet and dry seasons. The Hoi Van Pass we went through had spectacular scenery; the locals call it the pass of the ocean clouds. We stopped and saw some of the bullet holes and batteries in the old American bunkers used on the front line in the Vietnam war.
Stopped at a seaside resort in the afternoon for lunch. Huge waves had attracted a small surfing community. Waves reminded us of the last scene in the movie Point Break where Patrick Swayze walked into the killer surf.
We continued our drive, reached Marble Mountain and explored some of the caves there. The inside of the mountain was like a sonic drum where all sound reverberated to a loud hum. It created a very powerful impact on the body and made the visit to the shrine there very special. On our first night in Hoi An, we visited some of the hundreds of tailor shops there and got measured for some new outfits. The rest of the time we spent wandering around the old streets of Hoi An feeling very much at home. Wonderful old quarter influenced by many cultures especially the Japanese and the covered bridge. The Cargo Club where we enjoyed a delicious dinner (looked like the club in Casablanca) was also very special.
It was full moon while we were there and we enjoyed the atmosphere as kids lit candles and let them float along the river in little rice boxes and people were being punted around the river in local sailboats. Finished our stay in Hoi An by taking a Vietnamese cooker class were we learned how to make spring rolls, papaya salad and local fish in banana leaf. More thumbnails ...
