We took the local bus to Munnar. 6000 thousand feet above sea level. It was much cooler; glad to get a break from the heat and the mosquitos.
Munnar was full of wonderful green tea plantations as far as the eye could see!!. Amazing views. We went to the Tata Tea Museum and learned how tea is made, the different kinds of tea... really interesting. On the way we saw some workers, all women cutting the tea leaves, which grow every 15 days. The women go around different plantations all year around cutting tea leaves from plantation to plantation... that is why it looks so well trimmed. Hard work ..and they only get 75 rupees a day.. thats just under 1eu 50cents.!! Difficult to imagine how they can survive on so little.
We visited the Top hill station, walked to the viewpoint and stood in awe of the Tamil Nadu landscape stretching out before us. On the way back we even saw a wild elephant; the guide told us that a few days ago wild elephants wrecked a number of boats near the Dam. We went to the market and saw all different types of dried fish...God the smell was overpowering!! Had a vegetarian meal at the local restaurant which was served on a banana leave, really yummy!! We got a great deal from the Hotel, got a deluxe room which was a real treat for us... HOT shower Mmmm. We also got a nights accomodation at a tree house... I mean this was a real tree house, way into the Jungle on top of an ancient tree. The jungle was a bit scary at night full of bugs. We had a boy that came up to the tree house to serve us some take away dinner, it was really amazing to see the sunset from up there!!. That night we got such a scare. We could see the glow from fire raging in the forest not that far from where we were. Luckily enough we learned later it was only local farmers clearing some of the mountainside but at the time it was touch and go as to whether we were going to stay!
We both fell in love with Munnar, in so many ways it reminded us of home, green landscapes everywhere and the people were the friendliest we met to date. Sad to leave. More thumbnails ...
