I checked out these two glaciers that were at the bottom of this mountain called the Franz Joseph Glacier and the Fox Glacier. I still have a hard time understanding how this massive block of ice manages to stay frozen while it is blazing hot out. I could have climbed the glacier but it would have cost $130 and I'm really not a fan of ice anyway.
This American/British couple invited me to stay at their shack when I was in the area. So I stopped in and realized that they really do live in a shack
! They found a piece of land and bought it for a cheap price. Then they built a massive make it your self shack with sheet metal on the outside. It was massive, and very cool. It sorta looks like this oversized garage that could hold maybe 30 cars. They had this very old-school trailer/caravan from the 1950's that they turned into a spare bedroom. It was located at the bottom of several surrounding mountains and farms everywhere. The shower was outside with trees being used as walls. There was an outside toilet with no running water and no light. I slept here for two nights completely isolated from civilization. There was no T.V, no telephone or cell phone reception. I did all I could do being stuck out in the middle of nowhere with mountains at every turn. I climbed. I climbed this massive mountain all by my lonesome. It was very tiring and it took hours, but I did it! By the time I got to the top I was so exhausted and cold that I didn't want to move. I climbed back down a few hours later and had blisters all over my feet. I spent the next 24 hours recovering. The couple I was staying with were so kind. They fed me, they didn't charge for the accommodation and they were very down to earth.
Now I am in Wonaka, which is just 100km's outside out Queenstown (The extreme outdoor enthusiasts capital of the world). I just checked into a backpackers hostel and am gonna check out the happenings of this small town.
The last few days have been something a little different. I first went to this place where a seal colony lives and spied on them for while. They were hilarious. The baby seals were really energetic and playful while they older ones just hangout and laid in the sun.
