So, here we are in Brisbane - the final part of the final stage of
Australia. We've got a week here as we couldn't get a flight arranged
to Fiji as early as we wanted, but at least we've got some time to
relax after what can only be described as a very hectic couple of
months.
For those of you who don't know, Brisbane is the capital of Queensland
which in turn is known as "The Sunshine State". Yeh right! The sun
is shining today, but for the last five days the rain has been
phenomenal
kilometres down the coast there has been really serious flooding.
Pretty awful stuff. One of the caravan parks that we contemplated
staying in was over a metre deep in water! Apparently they haven't
had rain like it for over 30 years. Trust it to reoccur when we're in
town!
Anyway, it hasn't been all doom and gloom. Even on the wet days we
managed to entertain ourselves.
Here's a summary of what we've been up to so far.
Wednesday was a gloomy, wet and stormy day. We spent the morning on
the internet, updating it with photos and more of my seemingly endless
chatter about what we've been doing
raining for just long enough for us to jump on a train to the
Castlemaine Perkins Brewery, home of the famous Australian XXXX beer.
We had a guided tour of the brewery followed by 4 glasses of beer
absolutely free! We then wobbled our way back to caravan site just
before the heavens opened again!
Thursday came and the rain was still pouring down. The morning was
yet again spent on the internet with the website (see how much effort
we put into this folks??!) and then we treated ourselves to a movie.
Assuming War of the Worlds is out in the UK, it's a must see.
Fantastic special effects and surprisingly funny! Quite scary in
places though, so Shelly you might want to avoid holding a drink or
popcorn while it's on
Friday (yesterday) was meant to be a sunny day so we'd planned to do
the city walk taking in the monuments, the southbank of the river (the
trendy bit with the lagoon, lots of cafes and bars and an outdoor
theatre, then back past the botanical gardens. We started out ok, but
then once again the rain came down (pretty torrentially at times!) so
it took us twice as long what with having to find shelter every 30
minutes or so! It was a nice day though - nice to get out and about
instead of being cooped up inside.
Today is Saturday and hurrah! The sun is shining and the skies are
clear blue. We spent this morning wandering through the Botanical
Gardens and along the river, stopping for a picnic lunch and then back
into the city centre where we've called in for a quick internet
session before taking ourselves on a ferry cruise up the river!
Not sure what the next couple of days have in store. Hopefully the
sun will continue to shine and we can just mooch about soaking up the
sun and relaxing. I'm also hoping that we can go to the Lone Pine
Koala Sanctuary where they have 130 koalas for me to go ga-ga over!
Tuesday we leave Australia! A sad day but I'm so looking forward to
parking my bum on a nice sandy beach and not moving for several days!
