Firstly I had to find a US medical school which offers electives to UK students. Then I applied ($300). That in itself was no mean feat, obtaining letters to prove I am a students, my grades, references, a medical, blood tests, chest x-ray and a CV. Next I had to get a visa, which involved applying to the US medical school again for a form that says I can get a visa, then sending that off and paying another couple of hundred dollars (I have litterally forgotten the total money I have paid out). Then apply online for visa, go to London and get it delivered. Apply for housing ($900 per month). Apply to the state of NY to be allowed to work as a medical student. Books flights etc and all the usual stuff on top. And lets not forget that each and every step of this has been froat with problem after problem. It would take a book for me to go on about it all and I cant even remember it all, the sneaky ways we got around getting the results of the chest x-ray because they wont give information like 'results' out to the pateints on the NHS! Luckily I had a certain someone around to whom I could vent my various angers at, such as the incompetance of Barclays bankd in providing me with proof of funds for the visa...... and we all know the saga of the dimensions of the visa photograph.....
This does not even mention all the various pieces of work I have to complete and get graded for it as part of my normal course, two pieces of work before I went and a whole report when I get back. And further still applying to various funds for help and having to write them reports when I get back as well... you may ask why? Well I dont ask that because I may not have an answer yet....
