My friend Julianne, from Canada, and I went to Sinapore and Malaysia for 2 weeks for vacation. It was fun and relaxing. We had a pretty low key agenda, main goal: eat good food. Singapore as one of the locals coined it is "food paradise." It is true. Singaporeans include Chinese, Malays, Indians, and Middle Eastern folks. All those cultures together equals GOOD FOOD! My favorite place to eat was "Bagdad Street" or "Arab Street." You can guess what kind of food was served there. It was right next to the "Sultan Mosque," from which loud chanting at 5am called residing Muslims to prayer.

Singapore almost felt like home, if you can believe it. It is very modern and clean and everybody speaks English. The shopping was out of this world, and for the sake of my pocketbook, I barely scratched the surface. The other main language spoken there is Mandarin Chinese, whose sing-song quality was a nice break from the whiny Koreans, honestly. Koreans general way of expressing dissatisfaction, both young and old, is whining. It grates the nerves after awhile.

Singapore's Zoo and Night Safari were one of a kind. They aimed to keep the animals in their most natural habitat, housing them in lush vegetation. The separation between animals and visitors was like a moat, like around castles, that kept kanagroos from jumping out. Nonetheless, this lack of fences and cages caused me to wonder if the chimpanzees don't try to break loose every now and then.

Oh, and of course you can't forget the strict rules and fines--$1,000 for riding your bike in the wrong place etc. Julianne put her drink down on the subway and a worker immediately told her to pick it up. We rode in the taxi the whole time without a seat belt, realizing on the last day that we could have been fined $120.
