A month on from my last entry and things have changed a little....we've found our feet in Shenzhen and are working and earning money so we can fund more travels. Chinese new year was fairly quiet here, this city is new and full of people from all over china, so it basically emptied out for a few weeks. It was like a ghost town. We went out with one of the Chinese teachers on new years eve to a restaurant and ate some very good chinese food, then we went to a club on the 25th floor of a building. We found out it was the first club to open in shnezhen and is built in an apartment, it's tiny but lovely! full of buddha structures and traditional chinese wedding beds with big cushions you can sit in. Randomly, the dj was a swiss guy who played breakbeat and reggae. our group (a few teachers and their girlfriends) were the only people there, it was so cool, we just had our own private party!
We didnt get to go away anywhere as we were waiting for our new flat, but we had a week off to discover things. We went over to Hong Kong for a daytrip with Tom and Tim (both UK teachers)(Matt I'm sure you'll love that there are more toms and tims to be friends!)found a pub and had a sunday roast, it was incredible! i haven't had a roast since i left England and don't have the facilities to cook it at home, so it was a rare luxury!
At the end of the Holiday we got the keys to our new flat, which we are now in and happy (apart from the fact it's so new they are still building it so we have to put up with constant drilling and banging) but we have an enormous tv, big bedroom and basically all that we need. No bath : ( or oven :( but we do have some fabulous communist concrete sculptures in the communal area, plus a random section with swing chairs which is assigned for listening to headphones!? Theres a gym/bar/library don't know quite how they manage to fit together but the chinese made it happen, and a pool and a few little rooms that have chess tables in. It's called City Elite (our building) so now we feel very special!

tims and toms (reply) Feb 28, 2006 08:16 EST by craigie
i'm really pleased you've managed to find some tims and toms and hence am no loger worried about you in the least. you'll be fine with a tim or a tom. i went on my brothers stag weekend last weekend which was 'bear-claw survival' in the woods, it snowed and we skinned and ate a rabbit but it was all okay...because in our group of 8 we had a tim and a tom...safe!
