Not having the right materials to build the arc, we got the hell out of Airlie Beach. Booked on the overnight bus to Hervey Bay we armed ourselves with the usual sleeping tablets and books, snacks et al. The bus trip was surprisingly one of the most hairy rides that we've had on our whole trip. The fields either side of the bus were completely under water and the bus had a tenancy to hyroplane across the road when the road resembled more of a river. As night drew in and the rain lashed down more we buckled up and held on for the next 12 hrs. Not really much sleep that night !
Had a day chilling in Hervey bay (and sleeping) and then met the Fraser Island crew the next day. After our initial meet our group. We soon found we had a lot in common with most of the group, in terms of a general appreciation of cold beer. That coupled with the fact that it was Australia day meant we were all in for a couple that evening.
Matt our host at Koalas that night introduced us to the form for the evening and in particular his favorite Cane Toad, Black Betty. Now apologies to all animal/amphibian lovers but we were promised that no toads were hurt in the process. B got roped into a round of toad racing and after a bit of smooching with his toad who had been helicoptered in from Alice Springs and was looking rather fetching in red, the games commenced.
Various jockeys crouched over a circle with the toads in the middle and a party blower thing to give the toad a poke in the butt to get a move on. First toad out of the circle and back in the bucket is a winner. OK so not much skill required but dexterity was key. Lots of shouting and running around to avoid treading on the toads.....
Sad to say B didn't win but he still holds out that he was robbed !
