The Oldest City on Earth and the Lowest

Ancient Jericho is the oldest city on earth. It also happens to be the lowest city on earth, some 825 feet below sea level give or take a few feet. Tel Jericho or the spot where the Ancient Jericho once stood shows its age. It is in a far worse condition than many of the other the ancient sites I have visited, but much of that has to do with the building materials that were used in this ancient city, mud brick. Today modern Jericho is a spread out dusty town with little economic life. The weather is fantastic in the winter and unbearable hot in the summer, but it has ample water from ancient springs like Elisha's Spring which had gone bad bone was restored by the prophet Elisha (2 Kings 2:19-22). As you look at the pictures read the stories from both the Old and New Testament about this important cities role in redemptive history (Josh 2-6; 1 Kings 16:34; 2 Kings 2; Matt. 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52; Luke 18:35-43; 19:1-10).
