G/day All,
Well here is another short day trip to have a look at and be jealous, I started planning this trip about a week ago was sitting here doing nothing when i decided to have a look on Wotif.com for a cheap hotel, spotted a 5 star wotif hotel deal that is one that you don't know what it is till you book it, the deal was too good to miss. The deal was made and the hotel announced and much to my joy and delight was the Sofitel down the coast at Broadbeach, by the way Nancy did not know i had done this as it was a surprise for her as in my mind (that's a scary place to be believe me ) i calculated it out to be that we had been together 25yrs and i wanted to do something nice.

As i work nights and at this point i am only working 3 days a week i chose a Monday night  to stay, When i got up Sunday night to go to work i asked Nancy to have a overnight bag packed and be ready when i got home at 9.30-10am  to head out i did not tell her where or why we were going. I got home from work early at just after 9am and had a shower and changed and we were off and running at 10am left Cadbury (He is a attack cat) to guard the house and ward of would be mice invaders, had a good drive down the motorway to the gold coast to sufferers paradise oops sorry surfers paradise this little gem of a tourist strip used to be family orientated but now it is a sad an sorry  run down tourist ghetto at night the yobbos run amok drinking and being stupid during the day it has no luster at all. So as a result the area is full of closed shops and only a few attractions that would remotely interest families most of it is pubs clubs and they are only interested in the drinker not the families that used to come here.

The day we were there they were in the process of digging up the road along the beach front so even the iconic sign welcome to surfers paradise was lost in a maze of construction fencing we went down to the beach and as usual as it is winter very few people were there as the water temperatures were too cold to swim in (well for us warm blooded Queenslander's), we had an ice cream i managed to perv on the meter maids that have been down here since i was a kid their job now is mainly promotional and they still feed the  parking meters for the tourists but they still have that certain appeal as you can see from the photo's (they cost me a slap on the back of the head) so off it was to our destination just up the road at a place called Broadbeach it is now the new family area has a stack of hotels apartment and holiday flats and a good size entertainment precinct as well as a good beach.

I pulled into the driveway of the sofitel and Nancy looked at me and i said be right back and went in to check in we were nearly 2 hrs early but hey what the hell a few minutes between friends won't hurt. I approached the reception and was greeted with a " Bonjour sir how are you today" and a fantastic real welcome smile not one of those pretend ones that reception people get after seeing thousands of people a year, I gave my name and said i had a booking and she said yes sir there you are and then being me and being cheeky i asked if i could possibly have an upgrade  as it is our 25th anniversary, well she smiled and said " it will cost you 50 dollars and are you having breakfast as well sir " i said yes we would so she said well that's included  whoo hoo that's good ,so from getting a classic river view room on the 5th floor we went 10 floors up and had a ocean view room and king bed. Oh and i added valet parking hey if you going to pretend to be  rich why not go the whole hog.

We then entered this room well wow what a room nice airy and the view was fantastic the bathroom was huge separate shower and bath and all marble flooring, after putting the bags down we headed back out to have a look for some lunch found a food court and looked arond the usual offerings Chinese greasy fish and chips Indian and carvery as well as a sort of hm will you chance it or not Japanese outlet their name was sort of off putting as you were not too sure how to take it, when we entered this food court the sun was shinning the sky was blue as  but after we came out it was overcast cold and windy hm typical coast weather this time of year.

We then headed down to the beach and had a look there and again no one was swimming just the odd walker and fisherman the beach was wide and expansive and you could see all the way down to the New South Wales border and Coolangatta the last tourist town on the Queensland side of the border, after watching a young lass training for the world titles in Egypt this year in beach sprinting, we headed back to check out the eateries  for dinner tonight and by that time the sun was out again.

We headed back to the hotel and up to the room as i wanted to get a cat nap in other wise i would fall asleep in my food tonight, when we entered the room there was a bottle of sparkling wine in a wine carry and Nancy said did you order that and i said no  and then i said well might have been to do with the fact that i said we are celebrating our 25th anniversary  and i asked if we could have an upgrade  she laughed and said you idiot that was 2 years ago. Well you can't say i am slow or quick  hey but at least i remembered it (just as well Cedric was left at home he would of been playing out on me all day and night then).

After my snooze we decided to head down and see what was on offer again at the restaurants and  decide what to have, after walking around looking and reading menus most of them were the same seafood pasta and steak we finally picked a place  we decided to go with the three course menu and had a couple of drinks the meals were good and the staff pleasant, after that we walked back to the hotel and up to the room.

Next morning i was up early as usual and went down and took some photos of the sunrise  and other things and came back had a shower and got ready for breakfast, this was amazing the food was plentiful and hot the coffee was nice and the sun was shining. We went back up to the room got the cameras an set out again to have a look around.

After-wards we checked out and came home to a much relieved Cadbury as as soon as we opened the front door he was out looking for the biggest piece of kitty litter he could find and screaming as he went past don't you ever do that again sheesh i have been crossed legged for over 24hrs.

Would we stay there again YES would we recommend it to every one YES.
