The four of us got up early this morning to watch the sunrise over Lake Wayangan. It was like a picture postcard with wildlife, mist and colours. I then went for a walk for 35 minutes as there was no rush to leave before 9am. Once on the road we stopped after one hour at the Merriwagga to visit the Black Stump Hotel which has the tallest bar in the Australia. Problem was it didn't open until midday and it was only 10am so a picture of the Hotel from the outside had to do. It did have the only parking meter in town out the front which was stuck on 10 minutes and full of cobwebs. We then travelled on to Hillston arriving around 10.45am for morning coffee which is situated on the Lachlan River. Next stop was Mount Hope about 160k's from Cobar on the Kidman Way Highway for lunch. After soup and biscuits for lunch we arrived at the Cobar Caravan Park around 3pm and set up the van only to be greeted by two fellow retirees from Shell whom I worked with for many years
We retired to our van around 8pm to set up the tv to watch Mrs Brown's Boys at 8.30pm. On Saturday there is Horse Racing on in Cobar so we have all decided to make it a day at the races as something different to do. It should be a good day.
Friday 10th May.
Out for our morning walk but this time the Caravan Park is at one end of the main street so it was a 45 minute walk into Town and back again. After breakfast we visited the Tourist Info Centre then off to the Twisted Sisters Cafe for morning coffee to discuss the days agenda as a tourist. I broke the news that I was suffering from a toothache and could only get to see the dentist on Monday morning. It turns out that there isn't a dentist at our next stop in Bourke apart from organising the Flying Doctor Service so we will be staying in Cobar an extra day so I can visit the dentist.
The guy at the Info centre suggested we drive to Nymagee and visit the local pub for lunch. The only problem was it was a 200 kilometre round trip with 62 k's on gravel road which he said 20 years ago was a very good road. We decided to give it a go and we reached the Pub at midday only to find that the cook had taken the day off and the only food available was a microwaved pie, dim sims or a chicken roll
On the way back to the van we stopped in town to catch up on some grocery shopping and then we went to the Central Hotel for a drink so we could rate the town. Back to the van then it was over to one of our ex workmates van for happy hour then back for dinner. By this time the Geelong Essendon match was about to start so it was time to say goodnight sit in front of the tv and hope. Off to the Cobar races tomorrow morning.
Saturday 11th May.
Out for our daily walk into Cobar and back to the van. After breakfast we hung around the van doing those small job that get missed until it was 11am and time to head to the Cobar Races. We ventured out to the Fort Bourke lookout first to take some photo's of the CSA mine (Cornish, Scottish and Australian) then stopped at the outskirts of Cobar for a photo of the town entrance before heading to the races
We all agreed it was a fantastic day had by all. Country Races are just a great event to go to and a local trainer was successful in three of the six races. There was also many other happy people leaving the races but happy in a different way. (from over indulgence). I was even pulled over for a breathalyser just outside the carpark on the way home. Once back at the van we had happy hour followed by dinner then we all retired to our vans to watch the Swans Hawthorn match on tv.
Sunday 12th May.
Again up and out walking by 7.30am for nearly an hour. Today is planned as an easy day with both Dave and I washing the vans and 4WD's and the girls completing the washing and cleaning the vans. After lunch I went and refuelled Merlot and went to the car wash. By 4.30pm with everything finished we decided to walk to the Cobar Bowls Club for a few drinks.Three schooners later we walked back to the park on dusk for dinner and a couple more drinks before retiring to the van for the night to dream of my visit to the Dentist tomorrow morning.
