Hi All!

Feels like ages since we last updated you on our travels, so we're combining three places within Malaysia in this one blog!

But before we get to what we've been up to here, on our last night in Singapore we went up to the viewing deck of the Marina Bay Sands AKA the 'ship across three buildings' building!  Views were awesome, but we thought the laser show was better from ground level as we'd seen it on our first night there - anyway, there are three new pictures in our 'Singapore' entry for you to check out!

We were quite sad to be leaving the organised efficiency of Singapore, but we were excited to be heading to Tioman Island, Malaysia for some well earned R and R, beachtime.  We were not disappointed!  We caught a bus across the border and then a ferry across to Tioman...the bus driver was obviously excited about the Formula One GP that weekend and got us there in record be fair to him though, it did mean we didn't miss the last ferry of the day!! (Also those of you watching the what we understood to be very wet GP, rest assured Tioman didn't get hit with a spot!).  We spent one night in a hut (with a fan), but found it too hot! so moved house next day to an AC hut across the path from the beach, where we stayed for 4 more nights (complete with the occasional lizard!).  We mostly sunbathed, read, went swimming and watched sunsets, drinking 60p cans of beer and t-bone steaks for a fiver!  There was one slight panic when we watched a ship sinking in the distance....but thankfully this was just an old american wreck, being sunk for the divers! Not the passenger ferry then, phew!

We caught the first ferry back and then a bus journey to Melaka for 3 nights, where we stayed at the oddly named 'Backpackers Freak Hostel!', was really great location though within 5 mins walk of everything.  We visited all the main historical/cultural sights there (Museums, Chinese Temples, Church ruins, old fort and a traditional 1600 Dutch house/shop in China Town).  We also went up the slightly tacky, but fun observation tower, which had great views over Melaka, enjoyed a night-time river cruise and walked through the China Town/Jonker Street night market.

It was in China Town, after a brilliant meal at 88 Jonker Street (famous noodle bar) that we experienced the most bizarre dessert ever, Ross said "it was one of the biggest disappointments of my entire life! I've never been unable to finish a dessert before!" It was a bit minging to be fair, ice shards with sauce (this bit was okay) but mixed with kidney beans and sweetcorn = not convinced!! But a local delicacy, so we had to try it!  We also went for a bit of a western experience on our last night there - and watched 'The Hunger Games' (2 english pounds each!) followed by a MacDonalds! Whoops!

We caught the bus to Kuala Lumpur for 4 nights, staying in a shared appartment on the 18th floor, which has brilliant views of the skyline!  You may notice from the pictures that we made it to the Petronas Towers (which we thought were amazing) and found an ace food court in the huge mall beneath/between the towers.  We walked around the ridiciously expensive shops again, Ross contemplated a Tag Heuer watch, I fancied some Jimmy Choos, but felt this was perhaps a little extravagent for backpacking...maybe next time ;-)

We went proper touristy and caught the hop on/hop off bus around town and saw the new Royal Palace, China Town, Central Market, Orchid Garden, National Monument and then on to the KL Observation Tower....where Ross caught the lightning shot of the Petronas Towers :-)

Finally, dodging some refreshing rain! we walked up the 272 steps (!!!) to the Batu Caves yesterday and have had a bit of a chilled day so far today, sorting out domestics (washing!) and accommodation for the next two stops, which are Georgetown (Penang) for three nights and then Langkwai for three nights to chill on the beach before heading across the border to Thailand (visas to be picked up in an hour or two).

Not sure when we will get chance to update you again next - but hopefully in the next couple of weeks! We hope you are all well and send lots of love to you all.  Thanks to everyone for the emails and messages, it's lovely to hear what's going on back home, so please keep them coming!

Lots and lots of love

Ra-Ra and Ross xxxx
