Heading into the unknown
Entry 1 of 39 | show all | print this entry |
With just two weeks until I depart a lot of things are still unknown about the upcoming year. The one thing I do know is that this will be an adventure I'll never forget and one I'd regret missing if I hadn't jumped at the opportunity.
My current game plan is to leave Canada for Auckland, New Zealand on November 8th and spend the next 8-10 months working, living and exploring the country. I hope to meet some really fun people and save some money before moving on to Thailand for a few months in South East Asia before returning home on or before November 8th, 2005. Armed with a NZ work permit and a backpack of items that will be my life for the next year, I have no definite plans (I'm trying to be spontaneous which goes against my every planner instinct) except to see where the time takes me.
Before I have to quit a job, or sell a house to travel the world for a year, I decided to do it now when the chance has presented itself without too many obstacles. I've always wanted to visit the South Pacific and Asia so I decided to just go for it and book a ticket. Spending 7 weeks on my own in France this summer showed me that I definitely meet more people when I travel alone and I can only imagine this will increase in ultra-friendly New Zealand. Sure there are times when you find yourself alone in a strange city, but more often I found myself meeting up with other adventurous, out-to-experience-the-world-on-my-own people. I also learned that mass emails are not the most efficient way to keep in touch from the road so I'll be using this travelogue. If you are dying to hear my latest story you can check back often, or not at all - up to you entirely with no worry of overloading inboxes with yes, I'm still alive, type messages.
Hard to imagine but since this is a public travelogue some people reading my stories may not actually know me so here is a little background to get them caught up. At the start of this trip I'm a 23-year-old recent university graduate who has spent most of the last five years living in Vancouver, Canada while attending university. After graduating last spring I spent the summer in France on my first solo travel mission AKA the safe test trip for this one coming up. South East Asia (SEA) has always intrigued and intimidated me, but I sense it is now or never so here I go. After NZ that is...
Wish Me Luck!
