What I did
Marburg Schloss (Castle)
I arrived in Germany a week ago today, and was met at the airport by my good friend from University, Hanna, and taken back to her student apartments in Marburg, where I stayed for 4 days. She showed me around her town- and said we could do everything in a day or less because it is that small- after being shown around it I believed her. We ate at good places between running our errands and the like. It is AMAZING to be eating fruit and vegetables again and I feel so much healthier already. Marburg is a beautiful old town filled with young people who study there- how I've missed German architecture, especially after 4 months surrounded by the not so charming Adobe and red brick styles of Tucson! Hanna had lost her wallet on a night out a couple of days before I arrived and was in the midst of trying to recover it (alas, nothing yet) so I had a new German experience of going into a police station
I met a few of her friends from exchange during their usual dinners where they cook together in one of the student apartment buildings and eat together. Almost everyone was packing up their things and leaving over the short time I was there, including Hanna so when I left hers on Thursday, we both left- she heading for Dusseldorf and I for Mannheim to my old host brother, Johannes', apartment.
After battling getting on and off trains, and train delays (it only happens in winter when the weather is bad; Germans like punctuality and their trains are a perfect demonstration of this) I arrived at the Mannheim Hauptbahnhof (Main station) and Hannes spotted me in the crowd. I may or may not have been the reason there were so many people around that particular train door... It was so good to see him again and we were instantly back to our silly ways- even before we left the station. Unfortunately, he had blown the secret, which he had known about for 6 months, only two days before I arrived
After two nights in Mannheim we made our way home to Mosbach, and the family Roos (yes, for those of you who weren't aware, when I'm in Germany I'm Rose Roos (pronounced rose)). It was absolutely wonderful to see them all again and even two days was enough of a surprise that we didn't quite know what to do with ourselves haha. Plenty of catching up and eating- yes it has already begun, the Germans stuffing me with food. I'm back in Anna-lena, my older host sister's room, just like old times! That night I went with Hannes to his highschool reunion night at an all you can eat Chinese restaurant and met some of his classmates - a few of us even recognised each other from my last visit. Later on I got to see my favourite of Hannes' friends, Grizzly, who has the best nickname ever. When the reunion moved to Ludwig bar, I hung out with my younger host sister, Christina, as well as the others. After not much sleep, I got up early to skype with my family back home during their Christmas dinner and then skyped with Imari until everyone was ready for food. Today it was my host father, Klaus's birthday and an hour after presents and breakfast we went out for a HUGE birthday lunch with Oma and Opa at The Wild Man restaurant
Now we are all lounging on the couches recovering from all the food. So much food I'll still be full this time tomorrow I'm sure. I'm also sure I'll be fed another week's worth of food before then, however. Is it a good thing or a bad thing that I'm a sucker for German food? Haha.
Anyway, I should go because I'm in Germany, and you're not. Unless you're Harry or Hanna. Tomorrow it's the first day of Christmas and the day of presents! I'm excited for them to open the presents I sent in July (had to make sure the post wasn't late!) because they are all NZ goodies!
Liebe Grüße, Rose.
