Today we visited Deadwood, South Dakota. It is an old mining town from the 1876 gold rush, that has capitalized on its past. We took a guided tour of the town with a very knowledgeable guide who told us the past of many of the town's buildings and also took us on a tour of the main cemetery in town. This is the resting place of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane. They are buried side by side in the cemetery built on the side of a canyon. The town also has re-enactments of Wild Bill’s death, and street gun fights. It is a big gambling town with many small casinos. Its past is also captured in the upstairs displays of the girls of the night, who were actually at work in town until in the 1980s when they were driven out of town.

Outside of Deadwood is a wonderful interpretive centre called Tatanka dedicated to the American bison and the Lakota people. It was built by Kevin Costner who has a passion for the Native Americans and the way of life that was taken away by the white man. He commissioned a sculptor to create larger than life size bronze sculptures depicting a buffalo jump. A very informative presentation by a Lakota Native helped us to understand more about the Lakota people.
