Puebla Fri 17th-18th November, 2006, ***, Maccy Ds, Burger King, Domino's, 7eleven, Oxxo, Radioshack
We arrived early Friday in Puebla expecting to find a little town but what we found was what seems to be a typical Mexican city: An easily navigated centre with a large sprawling suburbian mess.
Puebla is a grand, oul place to spend a day or two in normal circumstances but Collins and I had the fortunate experience to arrive there during its International music festival. This festival translated as a Latin American music festival in real terms but it was fantastic because we got to attend three concerts of song, rhythm and dance! Collins pretended not to be too enamoured by them for fear of appearing gay but they really added a bit of a jizz to this fairly bland city. The best concert was on the Saturday and was, interestingly enough, for kids...the festival was a little like some of the arts festivals that go on in Ireland only that the admissions were free which was obviously an extra bonus,
I vowed after Vienna in 2004 that I was finito with visiting churches and Cathedrals but they´re so exquisitely decorated in Mexico, it really would be a huge shame to miss out on them. I've been busy praying the whole time as well so if you feel like your life has suddenly improved for no apparent reason, you probably have me to thank cos I've nearly prayed for Hitler's grandnephews at this stage!
The Cathedral in Puebla is no exception in the catalogue of beautiful churches in Mexico. In fact, the interior of the Cathedral in Puebla is the most beautiful I´ve ever seen. Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to leave it too late to capture this beauty without a flash both evenings we were there,(it was prohibited to take a pic with a flash and this is one rule I feel is worth following)
Over the two days, a load of Mexicanos approached us to fill out surveys on tourism in Puebla for their course at College. The highlight of our time in Puebla was definitely when Collins was doing an English radio interview...He was there cracking jokes like there was no tomorrow. He eventually gave up on the third or fourth attempt when they were still staring at him with blank faces. Poor guy, not being funny in Ireland is bad enough but he was certain he'd crack up the folks of Mexico with all his "bery fuuunny phrases"..tough break eh
Left Puebla Saturday evning to face into an eleven hour journey to San Cristobal de las Casas..and not surprisingly, the bus was an hour late!!
