Dallas-the start of it all
Entry 1 of 91 | show all | print this entry |
DALLAS 10th-14th October, 2006. Naturally every type of globalization imaginable..Maccy Ds, burger King, subway, star bucks etc etc-
Arrived into Dallas airport late Tuesday night Oct 10th, jet lagged and bagless (the unexpected rain had taken its toll on the windy city of Chicago)
We were collected there by my big couz Kevin and his galpal Cat. We got an early night in Lety and Beachamp's (the family of my family) house where we stayed til the following Friday. Lety, Beauchamp and their familia were absolute gems and treated us really well.
Had a blast in Dallas. We saw a good bit of city which has some very nice red brick buildings! Got to catch up with my couz Shelene on the Thursday when we visited the JFK museum, the Dallas cowboys' stadium (got to stand in Tyrrell Owen´s locker room if that means anything to you sports buffs) and went to see the Dallas Mavericks b-ball team play. It was a pre-season match so we didn´t get to see the great German, Nowitzki, play but Collins was more than satisfied with the cheerleaders´display!
We then hit the Texas state fair on the Friday with Lety and co and it has to be said that it excelled that of Ros fest 2006..only slightly of course! Between an impressive exhibition of the human mystery that was Marilyn Monroe (including a sculpture made from butter), imaginative desserts of every kind including fried coke and a skateboarding display that would appear on the extreme channel, it was certainly no small feat.
The opportunity to sample some of Dallas´ more bohemian nightlife arose on the Thursday and Friday nights when Lety´s son Martin offered to play the host with the most...beer! It was very interesting to see pubs existing in America that consist of little more than a pool table and a concrete floor. The experience was actually quite refreshing and enjoyable. And it must be said that the cheap Texan national "lonestar" beer was certainly a bonus. Good old fun was had by all.
Saturday morn, slightly groggy and still a bit sick (not actually self-inflicted...once again, a sore throat, ear ache and general fluey symptoms struck upon landing..I´m beginning to think I´m allergic to airplanes), we hit off for San Antonio with Kev.......and here we spent the next two weeks..
