No amount of Rocky singing, hydration or peer motivation can get you to the top
Yes to all you hike freaks who love this kind of thing- ok its satisfying to get to the top but to then decide to reach the top of Wayna Picchu was just sheer silliness on our part. We thought; why the hell not, we made it this far, we might as well do it seen as we got up at 2am to queue for a bus that didn’t leave till 5am to be the first 400 people in order to be able to have the option to go up it. So we did. Then, even more ridiculously we decided we would save $7 each by not opting for the bus down Machu Picchu; we were on a roll, lets walk down, come on, lets just do it, we will be really proud of ourselves and maybe I will even lose some weight…the stairs were never ending, the mountain was deep, our feet were pounding, our heads spinning, we were literally about to drop.
However, we got to the bottom and chinked a really cold fresh beer each and scoffed some stone baked pizza as a reward.
It was hard but ironically after this big moan, we are so glad we had a go. It was worth seeing Machu Picchu; a magnificent school for the kings atop an epic landscape. We learned a great deal about the story of the Inca and Peruvian history (shocking how many people we met who were on the same trip and had no idea what it was all about!) we enjoyed motivating each other and the sense of having a go.
