As well as these small observations the city is riddled with amazing history; the favela are on higher ground here as they were first settlers, the buildings are mixtures of colonial and new, it is truly a city by the sea. The culture is fascinating and we look forward to seeing and learning more here and throughout our world adventure!
We are on day 2 and look forward to updating more...
ps-getjealous.com restricts posts; we were gutted to have to choose a bigger forum for our BIGGER trip!
The rest of our time in Rio De Jeneiro was 'edgy' to establish our friend Steve’s description of the city. Despite it’s beautiful iconic landscape and its fame through the immortalised songs (which I made sure I sang every day till we were singing it in our sleep) ‘the girl from ipanema’ and ‘copa copacabana’ (got to love manilow!) we could not relax there. The dark and sinister side of the favela does not go unnoticed; we could not but help think of the film ‘City of God’ as we read the news that day a lady had been shot coming out of a taxi, and hearing of a couple who were held at gun point, we realised that we had not relaxed till reaching the stunning Ihla Grande.
To anyone wanting to go to Rio, we decided we would say it is memorable and worthwhile; buy Haviana’s (anish nearly committed the second crime of the day in that shop as I browsed the plastic laden walls..!) and drink plenty of Caiprinha’s (it was a messy day of travelling- hence rule number one- no drinking night before moving on!), enjoy the Brazilians with Brazilians in tiny bikini’s (anish said we had to put that in), eat rice and beans and amazing pincaha’s and most of all soak in this city by the sea- just be careful is all we say!
