Ok..so I'm blogging this from Singapore. Let's pretend I am doing this in Korea. We had a two hour stopover at the Inchon airpot. I have not been  to Korea since I was a kid in 1986. There are those who could argue that since I did not leave the airport this time, it does not count. I kinda of agree. But I was on Korean soil regardless, so here is the update. The Inchon airport is full of upscale shops. It sort of looks like a cross between Rodeo Drive and an OR. It is anticeptically clean...sterile almost. There were also more shopping helpers then there were clients. In one shop the tea had its own shop girl, as did the ginseng, the cookies, and the single malt scotch. The restroom was pristine. I thought I had accidently stepped into the W Hotel. Here's how they keep it that way. They had a gentleman permamently stationed there who was picking up any stray paper towel and mopping the floor. .
I had to make a phone call to Seoul and it took me the better part of an hour to find a way to pay for it. Finally the money changer girls took pity on me and changed $3. I was sputtering along in my remembered child's Korean. But there was some eventual mutual understanding.
I wrote about Korea for my senior thesis. It's a shame I did not get to spend more time there today. I'll have to make a special trip soon. I feel as if I know more about Korea than I do about any other country, and here I was looking at it from inside a glass box. The problem with traveling is that it is like an addicition....there's always another place that you have to visit.
One other observation: The seawater around Inchon was brilliantly green..glowing almost. I wonder why. The tide was all the way out as we flew in. Inchon has huge tidal swings. When MacArthur landed at Inchon in the Korean War, it was considered a very risky maneuver because he ran the risk of stranding his entire fleet and making himself a sitting duck for North Korean guns. It was overcast and rainy today. It gave everything character.

Angelo is flying in to Inchon in 3 days. If he stays in Korea for a year, I'll make an effort to visit while he's there.

Missed you by two days
Glad you enjoyed (?) your 1 hr layover in Incheon. I arrived here today. Last time I was here there was a robot that went around helping people. Too bad you couldn't spend more time in Korea, but as the airport is on an island, you need some time to drive anywhere and see anything. Stop by and visit one of these months when I am still around.
