Flying out today.
Packing:
We spent a lot of thought on packing light. Right now our packs are at 25 Lbs. Recommended max for this type of trip is 35 lbs. So we're comfortably under that. Our biggest luxury item is a travel Scrabble. It's elemental...like water or air. We are also bringing two paperback novels each which we will trade or leave with other travelers after we've read them. Our biggest concern at this point is that we won't be able to carry on our backpacks for flights.
Security:
We've divided up our IDs, money, and documents between two money belts each. We each are wearing one around the neck and one at the waist.
Health:
Medicine has been labeled in the languages of the places we are going Waiting for the Plane SFO
Waiting for the Plane SFO
. (Thanks Jenny and Sandra) We want to avoid any confusion or hassles over medications. We've started our malaria preventative medicine...in our case Malarone. We understand it's the least likely to make you see visions and hate yourself. The downside of Malarone is that it must be taken every day. But...if it preserves our sanity...it's a small price to pay.
Speaking of malaria, we have mosquito nets..bulky but vital. We anticipate being in anopheles mosquito country for a bit, especially in rural Cambodia.
Photography:
One Cannon powershot 8 mpxl. Uses AA batteries. While not usually my favorite this allows us to power up anywhere. One back up sony 4.1 mpxl. Photo Storage...I am using my 80G ipod and a usb adaptor. When Ipod is enabled as a disk it allows for uploading images and videos directly to the ipod. You can then scroll through the images. I can hold 60G images. It's kind of an "all the eggs in one basket" thing, so as a back up I will frequently load the images on Flickr.
Entertainment:
Aside from the novels, we've loaded 14 movies on the ipod as well as 13 books on tape and numerous podcasts.

As the trip goes on we'll write about what works and what we would do differently.

Aloha!

Impressed
Wowza, I'm impressed by what expert travelers you both are! You most definitely sound prepared and I got all excited just reading this entry, from the essential Scrabble to the scary malaria medicine. I should be going on a trip like this, but instead...I'll be starting work at Berkeley on July 15th. I'll be working full-time in Barker Hall as a Neuroscientist, not too far from ETS!

HAVE FUN ON YOUR TRIP AND KEEP UPDATING! I'll be reading! =)

Re:
Oh yeah, this is Miss Johnson, btw. I had to sign up for TravelPod in order to comment on your entries. ;)

Josh, that seat looks familiar
I sat two seats away from there today flying on the same airlines. Guess what? Airlines lost my luggage and both my suitcases remain somewhere in SF while I am across the ocean. Keep an eye on your bags.
