Bingen, River Rhein, Germany.

Goodbye to Crailsheim and the wonderful hospitality of our relatives. We will miss everyone very much.

Back on the train and off to Bingen on the River Rhein. We had to change trains in Stuttgart to go to Mainz and then in Mainz to Bingen. We are staying in the NH Bingen hotel and conference centre.

We unpacked and walked along the coast road to the Tourist Information Centre. We got a couple of maps about the Rhein and information about transport and renting of bicycles. We also looked at the local bakeries and cafes for our breakfast tomorrow morning.

We walked to the Heilige Geist Hospital. We admitted Kimberley to this hospital in January 2010 when she was dehydrated from a gastro bug. We walked through the city centre and looked at the Basilica of St Martin which was first built in 729 AD.

We walked along the River Rhein to find the people ferry to Rudesheim, which is on the other side of the river to Bingen. We found the car ferry so we took that instead. It was 2 Euro each one way.

We walked along the river road and then through some of the main shopping streets. We stopped in the cafe opposite the Christmas Shop for Rudesheimer Kaffee. It cost 6.80 Euro each. The waitress prepared it at the table.

We tried to walk to Assmanshausen but could not find the walking track so we took the ferry back to Bingen.

We chilled out on deck chairs on the river bank and watched the river traffic. Then we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. We sat outside. When the sun started to set they gave us blankets. It was truly blissful and relaxing.

Can't believe it - I'm up to date at last! Looked at every photo, read every note and just a few days to go! This virtual travel is exhausting ;-) Looked at mountains of delicious food that I couldn't eat and buckets of wine and beer that I couldn't drink. The things you do for the love of great friends! :-)
