Maiori, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Today we used our three day bus pass to go to Positano and explore some of the towns along the way. The coast road is only wide enough for two buses in some places and corners only have room for one bus to negotiate. The road has a stone wall all the way on the cliff side. It feels very safe on the road. The bus drivers are very skilled. It is a very interesting journey. They honk their horns at most corners and definitely have a horn honking language.

Maiori to Minori
Beautifully renovated church in Minori. Contains the crypt of San Trofimena.

Minori to Ravello
I took some photos of buses passing us on the Amalfi Coast Road. It looks like the passengers are in our bus.
Our bus had to back to let two other buses through. The challenge was getting the cars behind us to back.

Ravello to Amalfi
We stopped on the beach for a quick swim. In Amalfi we changed SITA bus to a Sorrento bus.

Furore to Praiano to Mandrino to Positano.
The views along the coast road are beautiful. There are resorts and terraces built into the steep cliffs along most of the coast road.

We walked along Positano and had a swim. The beaches are not pleasant. Australian beaches are far superior.

The beaches contain dirt and stones in the water and on the shore. It is very difficult to walk in the water as the stones hurt your feet. The beaches are too hot to walk on. There are small stretches of beach and most of them are owned by the cafes and restaurants and you have to pay to use the deck chairs and umbrellas. The water was cold even though it was 32 degrees today. There is also a film on the water from the boats and ferries. The beaches are shared between swimmers, canoes, paddle boats and the jetties and boats. The nicest beach in Positano is a 15 minute walk around the cliff past the marina to a small beach toward the old fortitude tower. We tried to walk to the tower but it was blocked off.

We took the 3.30pm bus back to Amalfi and explored it for about an hour and then back to Maiori.

A shower and drink on our balcony and then out for dinner.

Roads too narrow for large buses but there are buses anyway? Then somebody has to try to get cars to backup? Sounds just like Ubud, Bali :-)
