Today we walked 22 km from Zubiri to Pamplona.
Unfortunately this is the end of our Camino Peligrino trek for now. We will be back to finish the 800km journey in proper Pilgrim style.
We had to move our car. We decided to drive to Zubiri but we made a few wrong turns trying to get onto the freeway. I saw a large car park so we went there. It was the Navarra University car park and we were able to park there free all day. What a bonus! We had breakfast at a local cafe - coffee and pastries. We took a taxi to Zabiri and found that a lot of others did the same because by about 3pm yesterday all of the Allberges and Hotels in Zibiri were full
We seemed to start late and finish early. We were faster than most on the trek so we passed most people again everyday. We knew we were only walking for three days and not 40! It doesn't matter how fast you do it everyone seems to stop at the closest village to the 25 km mark. We had an advantage in that our packs were lighter; no sleeping bag or extra shoes mainly. But we didn't have a waist strap so all the weight was on our shoulders. I am not sure if a full well designed pilgrim pack would have slowed us much more. We certainly got tired and fitter. Today after about 21km we passed a waterfall that I wanted to photograph. We had the energy to want to go down 2 full flights of stairs to see it. On the way back we run up the stairs with packs on!! Did it before we thought about it.
Anyway we passed the same people and chatted for a while each day. So we are part of a team of pilgrims really that look after one another, finding the way, finding the strength and enjoying the bad as well as the good. After another 40 days some would have become our close friends. Margaret and Dennis from Perth may keep in touch. They come to Adelaide for the wineries. Hope they do. We will have so much to talk about. Others to remember are Tom the Englishman, Julie from San Francisco, Dave from American who had already been trekking for two weeks, Leanne from Sydney, a 19 year old Sydney girl who was travelling the world on her own, a Korean young woman and the two German giants. We did not always share names we just shared the journey.
Our bodies are tired now. Most people were staying in Pamplona for two days to give their bodies a rest. I think I have permanent dents in my shoulders from where the backpack pushed on the bra straps.
Off to Barcelona tomorrow.
